Are certain textiles carcinogenic??

Certain textiles can be carcinogenic, meaning they can cause cancer. This is mainly due to the chemicals used in processing the textiles, such as:

  • Formaldehyde: This chemical is commonly used in wrinkle-resistant and stain-resistant clothing. Exposure to formaldehyde can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, and even cancer.

  • Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): These chemicals are used to make clothing water-resistant and stain-resistant. PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because they take a very long time to break down in the environment. They have been linked to cancer, infertility, and other health problems.

  • Phthalates: These chemicals are used to make plastics more flexible. They are found in some activewear and sportswear, as well as in the printing inks used on clothing. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which means they can interfere with the body's hormones. They have also been linked to cancer.

  • Azo dyes: These dyes are used to color fabrics. Some azo dyes can break down into chemicals called aromatic amines, which can cause skin cancer.

It's important to note that not all textiles treated with these chemicals will be carcinogenic. The risk of cancer depends on the amount of the chemical in the fabric, how often you wear the clothing, and other factors. However, it is still a good idea to be aware of the potential risks.
